Lissauer works with the 2019-2020 editors-in-chief Marta Hill and Isabel Kjaer to cover Gov. Tim Walz's COVID-19 press conference addressing schools March 13, 2020. The story was uploaded on Echo's website within one hour of the conference and promoted on social media.
Web
NewsIn a normal year, print is the main focus for most of the staff, while web is typically overlooked. As news editor, I definitely fell into that mentality, but after a few months one of my strongest skills was producing timely and consistent posts on our website. At the very beginning of a cycle, I always made sure there was a writer and photographer for each story. Then I consistently checked in with them — not just right before a deadline — to make sure they were on track and to see if there was anything I could help them with.

The full websiteAs chief, I took what I learned from being the news editor and expanded it to all content areas. The most notable change is the use of a Google Calendar to lay out our upload schedule in a visual way. By doing this, I am not only able to make sure Echo has content being uploaded every day, but that all content areas have stories published regularly. In order to make this run smoothly, I work with the content editors to make sure all dates are reasonable and timely.

Social media
The internet gives newspapers the ability to share our content instantly. For as long as I have been on staff, Echo has posted all content to Facebook and Twitter. While we have a decent amount of traffic on those platforms, most of our student body uses Instagram (which was previously reserved for a few just a few important stories). We decided we were going to post all content on our Instagram story. By doing this more students are seeing the content we post.
We also tag the writer and photographer in the Instagram story so they can easily repost them on their stories. This way every single one of their active followers is being exposed to our content.
